Hybrid Perception

چکیده
This paper presents an overview of the timbre perception research. Timbre is found to be multidimensional, having a spectral envelope axis, mainly defined by the brightness of the sound, a temporal envelope, defined by the attack time, the decay slope, etc. and spectral irregularities. Furthermore, a model of quasi-harmonic sounds, the hybrid model, a timbre inspired signal model, is used to assess the just noticeable difference of a large number of perceptually relevant sound parameters. Further research is needed to better understand the perception of the parameters, and the relation to complex timbre perception, as well as to low-level perception research results. Better understanding of high-level cortex activities, such as learning and training, is also needed. Timbre perception understanding has traditionally been done using multi-dimensional scaling on the data obtained by having participants rate the differences of a large number of sounds played in pairs. These results are sometimes related to acoustic parameters. Other methods include spectral simplifications to assert the discrimination threshold of acoustic signal changes. Auditory stream segregation is also used. This involves playing a sequency of sounds, and asking subjects when two streams (or a galloping rhythm) are heard. Timbre definition seems still to be an open question, and many attempts to find words or acoustic signal parameters, which defines the values of the different timbre dimensions has been made.

ACI 2014 Differences in Perception of Musical Stimuli Among Acoustic , Electric and Combined Modality Listeners
Introduction: An increasing body of literature indicates that adult recipients of the hybrid cochlear implant have more accurate perception of speech in background noise and salient structures of music (e.g., pitch, timbre) than recipients of conventional long electrodes (LE). Improved perception of pitch and melody is a function of preserved low-frequency hearing. Children and adolescents who ...

متن کاملEffects of lower frequency-to-electrode allocations on speech and pitch perception with the hybrid short-electrode cochlear implant.
Because some users of a Hybrid short-electrode cochlear implant (CI) lose their low-frequency residual hearing after receiving the CI, we tested whether increasing the CI speech processor frequency allocation range to include lower frequencies improves speech perception in these individuals. A secondary goal was to see if pitch perception changed after experience with the new CI frequency alloc...
متن کاملSexual selection against natural hybrids may contribute to reinforcement in a house mouse hybrid zone.
Sexual selection may hinder gene flow across contact zones when hybrid recognition signals are discriminated against. We tested this hypothesis in a unimodal hybrid zone between Mus musculus musculus and Mus musculus domesticus where a pattern of reinforcement was described and lower hybrid fitness documented. We presented mice from the border of the hybrid zone with a choice between opposite s...
متن کاملA Perception Oriented MAS Model with Hybrid Commonsense Spatial Reasoning
This paper presents an approach to the integration of a logic based approach to the extension of behavioural specifications in a reactive model. In fact, in general, reactive models provide a robust support to the modelling and implementation of agent’s environment, they often lack in supporting the definition of complex autonomous agent behaviours. In particular the paper will describe how the...
